THE PERIODIC TABLE
Chapter Essential Questions:
- How does the structure of the Periodic Table allow us to predict the chemical and physical properties of an element?
- How is electron configuration determined using the Periodic Table?
- How is the periodic law demonstrated within the groups of the Periodic Table? Within the periods?
- What determines the length of each period in the Periodic Table?
- What kind of elements form cations? anions?
- Are you able to identify the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, halogens, and noble gases, and list three characteristic properties of each family?
- Why are the noble gases relatively unreactive?
- Are you able to justify why the alkali metals are the most reactive metals, and why reactivity increases down a group?
- Are you able to justify why the halogens are the most reactive nonmetals and why reactivity increases as you move upwards in a group?
- Can you identify four periodic trends and explain how each reflects the electron configuration of the elements?
- Are you able to rank elements in the order of increasing (or decreasing) size, ionization energy, electron affinity, and ionic radius?
